Bromelain

Bromelain is a natural mixture of enzymes extracted from the stem and fruit of the pineapple (Ananas comosus). It is mainly known for its proteolytic activity, meaning it breaks down proteins into smaller peptides and amino acids. Because of this property, bromelain has been widely used in medicine, food, and research. This is a powdered enzyme that is available at different activity levels and standardized to meet the application and dosage constraints.

Medical Uses

• Anti-inflammatory: Helps reduce swelling, bruising, and pain, especially after
surgery, injury, or arthritis.
• Digestive aid: Supports protein digestion in the stomach; can help with indigestion or bloating.
• Sinus and respiratory support: May help reduce mucus and inflammation in sinus infections.
• Potential cardiovascular support: Some studies suggest it may reduce blood clot formation and improve circulation.

Food Industry Uses

• Meat tenderizer: Breaks down tough proteins in meat, making it softer.
• Prevents gelatin from setting: Because it digests proteins, bromelain can interfere
with gelatin-based desserts if not deactivated by heat.

Cosmetic and Topical Uses

• Anti-inflammatory creams: Used in topical preparations to reduce swelling and promote healing of bruises and burns.
